Feather Heart (2020)
During 2020 the entire world stood still and in that time I'm sure we all reflected on ourselves, our wants, desires, motivations, and our passions.
I was inspired not only by the strong women in my life, but the beauty in the simplicity of life. In the act of trying to rid negativity and physically purge unneeded materials, I utilized the gift of time to explore the world of female intuition and I became fully immersed. The community of strong, powerful, intuitive women out there is incredible and with social media it is getting much easier to not only be aware of them, but to interact with women all over the world. I really resonated with the Egyptian concept of 'living with a feather heart,' especially with all the events happening in the world. Trying to adapt this perspective has made me feel happier, and closer to myself and the people around me.
I was inspired to use the digital media form for this collection because I think that this time has forever shaped how our world will operate. Some may hate the new normal, but everyone will benefit from letting the hatred go, move forward living with a feather heart, and finding the beauty in the simplest things.
Warrior Women (2015)
In society makeup is often used to alter and change, rather than enhance. Society pressures women to wear makeup and simultaneously views it as weak and necessary. The women in my drawings are dressed as warriors to portray that women can be both powerful and beautiful despite societal pressure. The use of makeup mixed with paint in the face demonstrates how strong women must be in order to avoid falling victim to the illusion of weakness. Through out the development of the pieces, the concentration began to focus on the inner warrior. Their faces are all done in makeup to portray that women can be both powerful and beautiful despite of how society views beautiful women as frail and powerless. The traditional attire and ethnicities of the women present that Women Warriors are not singled to one specific culture and allows for the different perceptions of strength around the world. By following the development of the pieces through different ethnicities and struggles in their expressions, I am presenting that women who are beautiful to society's standards are more than just superficial beings, they are Warrior Women.
This collection is inspired by Holly Decker's Warrior Women Editorial and her team of fantastic and powerful women that I was fortunate to work with.
